Mattia Preti, St. Paul the Hermit

Circa 1675
Oil on canvas
National Museum of Ancient Art, Lisbon

The saint is surrounded by items that artists traditionally include in portraits of contemplatives – here, a crucifix, a skull, a book, and prayer beads. He also has the items specific to his iconography: a long, white beard; a garment of plaited palm leaves; and a raven carrying a half-loaf of bread.
